This house reminds us of the rich Arab history of Spain, when wealth was hidden behind the whitewashed facades of village houses. Well situated, between Granada and the Mediterranean. Restaurants and shops are only a few steps away.

Location and outside area

Don't be shocked when you arrive here for the first time! Behind the façade of a typical village with a shared entrance (both properties belong to the current owner) you find the treasure inside. A very well sized house with an excellent garden area, its main feature. Several double doors from the living area open on to an extensive tree shaded terrace which incorporates built in barbecue and large tear drop shaped swimming pool (8m x 5m). Beyond is a large citrus grove which wraps around the back of the property and that of its neighbors. Visitors will delight in picking oranges, lemons, figs and pears at different times of the year and relaxing beneath the shade of the trees. Casa Larga is a newly restored village house situated in a quiet street of Melegis. The village nestles beside the Rio Torrente at an altitude of 500 metres (1,800 feet) making it cooler than the coastal regions in the summer and yet remaining frost free in the winter. Nearby is a large and picturesque reservoir lake. Melegís has its roots in Moorish Spain and its wider streets and scattering of large properties indicates its wealthy origins. The wider streets were built to ease the flow of the many large flocks of goats that came with increased prosperity. Like all the local villages, the houses are hidden behind plain white walled facades, offering only tantalizing glimpses of the courtyards and interiors. The area surrounding the village is extensively cultivated for citrus and olive fruit growing, and harvests the main supply of oranges and lemons in this region

Inside and lay-out

The house reminds of the rich Moorish past of this part of Spain, with use of rich colours and beautiful blue, green ochre and terracotta tiles throughout. A cool, tiled hall leads into the heart of the house, a long living space on two levels with comfortable chairs and a beautifully fitted kitchen with washing machine, large fridge/freezer, gas hob and electric oven. A sunny, private internal courtyard provides a sheltered sitting and eating area with doors to both kitchen and living room and a small balcony above. For more formal meals, a separate dining room contains a superb chestnut table made specifically for the house and elaborate wrought iron chairs. At the rear of the house is a spacious sitting room with open fire and comfortable sofas. From here, double doors lead to a cool, shaded loggia and the garden. Stairs from the living area lead to a spacious sunny landing with a double bedroom and en-suite shower room leading from it. This bedroom with its local iron framed bed, has a lofty beamed ceiling and a unique walk-in wardrobe and dressing area. The furniture is well chosen, hand made cupboards stained in a rich blue continue the blue and green theme. There is a smaller single room which contains an original fireplace. Each has hanging and storage space and there is a shared bathroom finished with hand painted rich blue and green tiles. The landing leads into a dressing room which has fitted shelves and wardrobe and also a unique set of bunks beds built into the wall. (These would be suitable for children.) From the dressing room, there is an entrance to the principal bedroom with large double bed, antique furniture and views over the garden. There is a superbly tiled en-suite shower room. At first floor level there is a small terrace overlooking the garden. Stairs from the landing lead to a large roof terrace on two levels which has superb views over the Lecrin valley and across to the Sierra Nevada. There is also a small rooftop kitchen and table and chairs for alfresco meals.
